What is Shiozawa Tsumugi?
Salted pongee(Shiozawa Tsumugi) is a textile that develops on the Shiozawa region, Niigata Prefecture, known for its deep snow.
In 1975, he was certified as a traditional crafts designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. It is one of Japan's three largest pongee that is on the shoulder with Yuki Tsumugi, Oshima Tsumugi. It is characterized by a fine grain -like texture on the surface.
Originally, textiles produced in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, and Shiozawa region are called Shiozawa textiles. Among them, Hon Shiozawa and Natsu Shiozawa are famous, but Shiozawa Tsumugi is said to be a representative textile in the Echigo region.
It is now difficult to obtain, but it has been tailored to some Aloha shirts at Far East Fabric. This time, I would like to mention Shiozawa Tsumugi.
Shiozawa is a town in Minami Uonuma -gun, southern Niigata Prefecture.
The name of Shiozawa -cho itself was dedicated because it was transferred to Minami Uonuma City on October 1, 2005. The area is surrounded by 2,000m -class mountains, so it is an area with many snowfall in winter.
The specialty is "Shiozawa, Uonuma Koshihikari", which is famous nationwide.
And it is the textile "Shiozawa Tsumugi".
History of Shiozawa Tsumugi
In Shosoin in Todaiji Temple, which was erected during the Nara era (756 AD), a high quality hemp weave woven in this area was stored as one of the taxes. Even now, the textile at that time is still left in Shosoin.
The fabric made in the Joetsu region about 1200 years ago was hemp. Hon Shiozawa was born by applying the technology of this hemp fabric "Echigo Jojo" to silk fabrics about 350 years ago during the Edo period (1661-72). The "Shiozawa Tsumugi" used was created.
In the Meiji era, Natsusawa was born by improving these silk fabrics into a refreshing and breathable material for summer.
The parent of Shiozawa's textile is "Echigojo cloth", the child is "Hon Shiozawa" and "Shiozawa Tsumugi", and the grandson is "Natsu Shiozawa".
This is an unusual case that has evolved the manufacturing method in the same area.
A unique texture with a cotton handle thread
The base of Shiozawa Tsumugi uses Kasuri and striped patterns of Echigojo cloth, which had long been in this region, and stripes.
The material uses a cotton hand -spun thread instead of the hemp in the upper cloth. In order to use cotton, there is little gloss, there is a small clause on the surface, which gives a unique texture. The fine kasuri and stripes Japanese pattern give a simple and adult impression.
In the past, it was a machine that was woven while sitting a resident machine, but in the 18th century, a high -style high machine (Takata) was introduced, making it possible to mass -produce.
Nevertheless, because it uses a cotton hand -spun thread, it is not a large amount of production, but it is treated as a very expensive pongee due to its rarity.
Commitment in simplicity
"Shiozawa Tsumugi" has many simple designs compared to Oshima Tsumugi and Yuki Tsumugi, but the large number of processes and the precise patterns are not taken compared to other pongee.
It is said that the large number of processes may be related to the fact that the developed place was in a snowy country.
In the summer, the agricultural work is woven with pongee in winter when it is closed with snow. Shiozawa Tsumugi, which grew up in such an environment, can be seen in the Joetsu region that is not in any pongee.
Shiozawa pongee is a luxurious kimono Aloha shirt
Shiozawa Tsumugi is also suitable for Aloha shirts because it has a crisp texture.
At Far East Fabric, I would like to continue to create beautiful Aloha shirts with high -quality Shiozawa pongee and connect to the next generation.
